At ArtCenter, graduation didn’t come with the classic cap-and-diploma moment I had always imagined. There was no cap to wear, and no physical official diploma to hold during the ceremony. For a day that marks such a meaningful transition, I felt like something symbolic was missing.

You Made It! was my way of bringing that moment back. Created for my graduation exhibition, the AR camera filter let students wear a virtual graduation cap and pose with a recreated ArtCenter diploma, turning a small personal disappointment into a shared photo moment for the Class of Spring 2024.

The filter placed a virtual graduation cap above the user’s head and brought a recreated ArtCenter diploma into the frame.

It was designed to be quick and easy to use during the grad show, letting students and visitors capture a small celebratory moment on the spot.

Modeled after the real ArtCenter diploma, with “Class of 24SP” added in place of an individual name so anyone could step into the moment.

I created the filter as a 3-day individual project, from concept to 3D modeling and AR implementation.

The graduation cap and diploma were created in Illustrator and Photoshop, modeled in Blender, and brought into Spark AR to appear directly through the camera.

I kept the ArtCenter diploma layout, then adjusted the details for the exhibition moment — including “Class of 24SP,” the ceremony date, and the small “You made it!” note.

The main challenge was making the filter feel natural in the camera. I adjusted the cap’s position and scale so it could sit above different heads, while keeping the diploma readable and balanced in the frame.
